AN INCENTIVE TO START MAKING CHANGES BEFORE THE BALL DROPS!

The Trouble With Resolutions

Most New Year’s resolutions are focused on doing more or less of certain behaviors (exercise more, eat less, sleep more, drink less, meditate more, complain less) As we head into Thanksgiving, I’ve been giving some thought to the many years where I viewed Thanksgiving to New Year’s as a free-for-all. There is always an abundance of food and drinks and non-stop celebrations. By New Year’s Day, I would typically feel awful – the perfect time to set a resolution. But only 8% of people actually follow through on their resolutions. So there I was, heading into the new year, having overindulged, feeling like the least healthy version of myself, with little chance of actually sticking to better behaviors.

Breaking the Cycle

A few years ago, I decided to break the cycle. What would happen if I used Thanksgiving as a trigger to engage with healthier habits so that I entered the new year feeling great and on top of my game? This is not to say that I stopped enjoying the holidays and the celebrations that come along with it. Rather, I began to take better care of myself and think about my grandfather who lived to be 95 embodying the motto of ‘everything in moderation.’

The Wisdom of Grandpa Phil

Grandpa Phil

Every day, Grandpa Phil drank a screwdriver before dinner, had a scoop of vanilla ice cream after dinner, and finished off his day with a cigar. This was his evening routine. While he had incredible self-regulation, on occasion, he would proclaim… “that drink made me feel like a new man. The new man needs a drink.”

The second drink was his version of indulgence. My grandfather loved life – he worked hard building a family business but was most often remembered as a happy man who took up oil painting at age 50 and was always reciting poetry and singing.

Now What?
